Food product dating

Dates on commercially packaged foods generally address product quality or a manufacturer’s recommended use period, rather than guaranteeing safety. Wild game processed at home usually does not carry standardized commercial date labels.

Label packages with the species, cut, and date of packaging. Maintain appropriate refrigeration or freezer temperatures and use recommended storage guidance; discard meat that has been mishandled rather than relying on a date or appearance.
