Melamine

Melamine is an industrial chemical used in products such as plastics and resins. It is not approved in the United States for direct addition to human food or animal feed.

Melamine became a major food-safety concern after deliberate adulteration incidents involving protein ingredients and infant formula. At sufficiently high exposure, particularly in combination with related compounds such as cyanuric acid, crystals can form in the urinary system and damage the kidneys.
