Labelling of GM foods

The U.S. National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard establishes disclosure requirements for certain foods that meet the federal definition of “bioengineered.” USDA administers this disclosure standard through its Agricultural Marketing Service.

A bioengineered food disclosure is intended to provide information about how a food was produced; it is not a warning that the food is less safe. The federal standard has specific definitions, exemptions and disclosure options. Not every food produced using biotechnology is required to carry a bioengineered disclosure.

Consumers seeking to understand a particular label should consult USDA’s current consumer guidance and the disclosure rules rather than assuming that the absence or presence of a symbol establishes a food-safety difference.
