Food safety for backpackers

Backpackers often have limited refrigeration, water, and cleaning supplies. Select lightweight shelf-stable foods, and avoid carrying perishable ingredients for long periods without a reliable means of keeping them cold.

Use safe drinking water for cooking, rehydrating foods, and cleaning utensils. When water safety is uncertain, follow public health advice for treating water. Prepare only what you will eat promptly, and protect food from animals and insects.
