Feeding babies and young children safely

Infants and young children need careful food preparation and storage. Wash hands before preparing feeds, use clean equipment, follow infant-formula label instructions and refrigerate prepared perishable foods promptly.

Introduce foods appropriate to the child’s developmental stage. Avoid unpasteurized dairy products and juices, raw or undercooked animal foods, and other higher-risk foods for young children. Honey should not be given to infants younger than 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism.
