Disease, usually gastrointestinal, caused by organisms or their toxins carried in ingested food. Also commonly known as “food poisoning.” Examples are the disease salmonellosis, which is caused by the bacteria Salmonella and the disease botulism, which is caused by the toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.
