Preventing insect infestations in dried food at home

Insects that infest flour, rice, grains, cereal, nuts and other dry foods can arrive inside purchased packages. Early detection and good storage practices help keep a small problem from spreading throughout a pantry.

Inspect packaging before purchase, rotate stored foods, clean shelving and cracks, and transfer vulnerable foods to pest-resistant containers. If insects are found, identify and discard infested foods and inspect nearby packages; freezing may be appropriate for some unaffected dry products when recommended by an Extension resource.
