Shellfish

Crustacean shellfish—such as crab, lobster and shrimp—are one of the nine major food allergens. U.S. labeling requirements call for the species of Crustacean shellfish to be declared. Molluscan shellfish such as oysters, clams, mussels and scallops are not included in the U.S. statutory definition of the major allergen ‘Crustacean shellfish.’

For a diagnosed food allergy, the principal preventive measure is avoiding the allergen. Consumers should follow medical advice and read labels every time because ingredients and manufacturing practices can change.
